Waziya cinema is the oldest standing movie theatre in Yangon with its art deco architecture from the 1920s. It
was once glorious and extravagant just like how the golden age of cinema was. Nowadays, it is used for
independent film festivals which occur seldomly. When not in used, the place is completely locked and
neglected.
When I was taking photographs of this narrative, I embodied myself as a spirit that has been lingering around
the building for a century, longing for its lost fame. It longs for its once glorious and alive identity
during golden age cinema period. In present time, human spirits and activities roam in and out in this empty
space. The blue lights wander like an aimless projection. The grandiose hall awaits for the bygone glory. And
the movie posters become a sad comedy. In this developing digital age, cinema is not gone yet but not
celebrated.
It is not dead but not alive. And, I as well.
